Empty water and soft drink bottles are everywhere in Nigeria. They are made from PET plastic, and recyclers buy PET by the kilo to turn it into new bottles, fibre and packaging.
How plastic bottles are sold
PET bottles are sold by weight. Collectors gather them, sort them, crush or bale them and sell them to recycling plants. The cleaner and better sorted the bottles, the easier they are to sell.
How to prepare bottles
If you are saving bottles to sell, a few tips:
- Empty them completely
- Keep them in sacks, away from food waste and sand
- Separate PET bottles from other plastics like jerry cans and nylon
- Crush them if you can, so more fit in each sack
